Untitled (Bleed us dry)

1987

Photograph and type on paper

18 x 18 cm (7 1/16 x 7 1/16 in.)

"Bleed us dry" is written in black on a white background on a photograph of rolled up receipts, with abstract multiplied numbers, contrasting their masochistic injunction.

Since 1979, Barbara Kruger has developed a singular photographic practice systematically based on found black-and-white images that she reproduces and modifies with cynical or ironic maxims. Presenting her works as attractive advertising posters with striking slogans, she delivers a sharp critique of contemporary society, starting with consumerism, as in this one.

Untitled (Bleed Us Dry) was presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection at the 2009 "Mapping the Studio" show at the Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
