Struttura n. 725/B (934)

1963

Natural and black anodized aluminum

64 x 64 x 12 cm (25 3/16 x 25 3/16 x 4 3/4 in.)

A tight metal grid encloses a host of cubic aluminium volumes. They more or less sink into the space while a play of light and shadow gives the whole work a vibrating or even kinetic rhythm.

Between minimalist sculpture, installation and prototype, this work, Struttura n. 725/B, is in keeping with Italian designer Enzo Mari’s approach. From the 1950s onwards, he fully participated in the European kinetic art movement. He made hundreds of strutture (structures) based on a square volume with endless optical and visual potential.

Struttura n. 725/B will be shown for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the exhibition “Au-delà de la couleur” ("Beyond Colour") at the Couvent des Jacobins in Rennes in June 2021.
