Self Portrait Oct 7th (9:30 am)

2008

Silver gelatin print

41 x 50.8 cm (15 3/4 x 20 in.)

A powerful self-portrait, Self Portrait Oct 7th (9:30am) confronts the viewer with the frank and hard gaze of LaToya Ruby Frazier. Half naked, disheveled and half-lit, she gives an unvarnished picture of her morning routine. To her nakedness corresponds the minimalism of the white walls and sheets, as an impersonal backdrop to her deeply intimate narration.

By revisiting the analog portrait technique and the codes of the 1930s American documentary photography, LaToya Ruby Frazier's The Notion of Family photographic series connects the private and political spheres. The series, which includes several self-portraits as well as portraits of her mother and grandmother, is a reminder that moments of isolation are also part of community life.

LaToya Ruby Frazier's Self Portrait Oct 7th (9:30am) was first presented by the Pinault Collection in the exhibition Dancing With Myself at the Museum Folkwang in Essen (2016).
