Grandma Ruby and me
2005
Silver gelatin print
42 x 50.8 cm (15 3/4 x 20 in.)
LaToya Ruby Frazier and her grandmother are sat on the floor in a living room where a large TV set is surrounded by various decorative objects: a sculpture, dolls, a Teddy bear, an old phone, and an imposing clock. If the artist shows the hint of a smile as she takes the picture, the grandmother is immortalized with a neutral and spontaneous expression on her face.
In the tradition of social documentary, Frazier takes photographs of her subjects in their intimacy at home. This authenticity is at the heart of the The Notion of Family series—featuring, among other photographs, Grandma Ruby and Me—, which portrays not only her entourage but also the state of an invisible America.
LaToya Ruby Frazier's gelatin silver print Grandma Ruby and Me was first presented by the Pinault Collection in the exhibition Dancing With Myself at the Museum Folkwang in Essen (2016).
