Florian Krewer explores the lives of young people living alone or in groups in indeterminate urban spaces, caught between tension and vulnerability. Eschewing a one-dimensional reading, the figures in Krewer's paintings seem to escape these tense situations through a kind of levitation and dynamic placement of characters on the canvas. Dark, nocturnal backgrounds contrast with surprising intense pinks, violets, or blues, and more muted whites and browns. He pursues his pictorial research with rage and risk. Animality and human violence are increasingly present, visible in his new works seen in the studio. The texture of each of his paintings, where it spreads, intensifies, blends, and expands his palette. They are also taking on an increasingly monumental dimension. He naturally works with light, the tension between elements, and expressions.
As he says: "My goal is to reinvent something with paint, with each new canvas. In some of them, there is indeed a lot of thickness, but I don't intend to proceed like that indefinitely. It's more about alternating thin and thicker layers depending on what I want to emphasize. Everything you can do with paint and color is truly fascinating!" His inspirations come from all sources: situations he experiences during his wild night outings taking photos, images he finds that can leave an impression, or his own imagination. However, the subjects often evoke the difficulties of life. There is a precarious balance between standing, dancing, or falling.
