This relatively small-scale work appears to depict a face whose mask is falling off. By rendering the falling mask more clearly than the face that wore it—which is visibly horrified at having been stripped of it—Florian Krewer seems to play on the contrast between the fixed nature of social masquerades and the turmoil they conceal.
