Patterns

2005

Oil on canvas

70 x 60 cm

Various triangular, oblique or rectangular shapes in the same light-reflecting beige material are suspended against a grey background. The work’s title refers to fabric patterns.

Photographic realism is prominent in paintings by Michaël Borremans, who enjoys mixing the characteristics of both media. They feature lone figures or simple objects depicted mainly for their visual interest and strong reflexive, even metaphysical dimension. The lack of any context fosters contemplation.

Borremans' work Patterns was presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection at the 2009 "Mapping the Studio" show at the Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
