Parallel Strata
Paraffin wax
132,1 × 358,1 × 242,6 cm, approximate surface area of installed piece variable
This work by Kishio Suga (b.in 1944) is composed of multiple sheets of wax, placed in layers directly onto the floor. No adhesive or supporting structure is used, the stability of the piece relies on the weight and natural cohesion of the material. Built on site and slightly adapted to each installation, Parallel Strata is one of Kishio Suga’s earliest works. The artist sought to create a piece that could not be categorized within conventional artistic classifications, offering visitors a particularly intense and visceral encounter with the material.
