Multiple Standing Rhythm

1973

Pastel and pencil on paper

79 × 54 cm

Japanese artist Kishio Suga (1944–2021) used everyday materials to explore how objects, surfaces and spaces relate to one another.

In a series of works on paper made between 1972 and 1975, he investigated the physical limits of the picture plane. Works such as Empty Site and Rhythm of Divided Scenery combine torn, cut and layered paper to form patterned arrangements that suggest spatial continuity beyond the edges of the sheet. Others, like State of Edge, feature missing corners that subtly disrupt expectations of shape and framing. These minimal interventions draw attention to the relationship between material, form and perception, inviting viewers to consider how a work of art exists in—and responds to—the space around it.
