Cosmos IX

2009

Oil on canvas, triptych

“I see the cosmos within my plate”, Subodh Gupta says. With photographic precision, the artist paints a series of kitchen utensils suspended in the air, as if in freefall, against a neutral background. The triptych Cosmos IX (2009) captures a moment in flight, a fragment of chaos that gives the receptacles a new level of grandeur. This poetic and contemplative work reveals the influence of Pop Art, but also of the still life tradition.

Stainless steel kitchen utensils are a recurrent motif in the work of this artist who enjoys collecting them. The avalanche of crockery in Subodh Gupta’s work is directly linked to his native country of India. It also demonstrates the changes in Indian society since the 2004 tsunami, creating piles of objects - and the way each individual leaves their own traces on these objects - that have become emblematic of a culture, constructing individual and collective identities.

Cosmos IX by the artist Subodh Gupta, part of the Pinault Collection, was shown at the "Eloge du Doute" (“In Praise of Doubt”) exhibition at the Punta della Dogana in Venice (2011-2013).
