Door with Lightbulb
1992

244 x 305 x 81 cm (96 1/16 x 120 1/16 x 31 7/8 in.)
Robert Gober's installation Door with Lightbulb immerses the viewer into a silent story. In the heart of a closed, dark space, a door appears surrounded by stacks of newspapers and two sources of light. A red light bulb ominously and alarmingly glows at the top while a ray of bright light streams in underneath. Concerned with the materiality of the object, Gober made all of this installation’s parts by hand, like the newspapers, in which he wrote each article himself.
A nameless, unsettling place, Door with Lightbulb fully expresses a mixture between familiarity and strangeness that is very specific to Gober's work. The door is a recurring theme in his ambiguous work, appearing in carefully lit environments.
An installation with a strong psychological impact, Gober's Door with Lightbulb is in the Pinault Collection. It was first exhibited at the "Sequence 1" show in 2007 at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
