Noeud 5.1 Varia 01 (Paris, June 2010)

While Nœud 5.1 Varia 01 (Knot 5.1 Varia 01) evokes a bronze rose covered in black patina, the layout with amazingly rotating petals – themselves very long – subverts the simple aesthetics of a flower. It is actually a knot, a poetic reinterpretation of the theory developed by British doctors William Thomson and Peter Guthrie Tait in the 19th century, according to the idea that each atom could be represented by a swirl of knots, whose shapes and characteristics determine physicochemical properties.

Jean-Luc Moulène became renowned in the 1990s for his documentary photography. His explorations later integrated new media starting from the end of the 1990s. He draws, sculpts and creates installations in a radical criticism of the aesthetic representations.

The sculpture Nœud 5.1 Varia 01 by Jean-Luc Moulène was first shown by the Pinault Collection at the 2016 “Accrochage” exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
