Phase of Nothingness–Cloth and Stone is the careful combination of stone and linen, of the heavy mass and of fluid and fragile support. The balance is found through the intermediary of a line that joins the two opposites, in a sort of mobile stabilised by the interdependence created by these three elements.
The interaction among the objects extends to an interaction between the artwork and its surrounding space: by joining the raw materials in a clean composition, Nobuo Sekine deepens his exploration of the perception of matter. An ephemeral work, Phase of Nothingness–Cloth and Stone was destroyed by Sekine after its completion in 1970, then recreated a number of times, e.g. in 2004 for a Tokyo exhibition.
The sculpture Phase of Nothingness–Cloth and Stone by Nobuo Sekine belongs to the Pinault Collection. The work was first shown at the “Prima Materia” (“Raw Material”) exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
