A football match of June 14th, 2002

Fiberglass, wood and naturalized bats

250 x 480 x 400 cm (98 7/16 x 189 x 157 1/2 in.)

A host of stuffed bats hanging from a huge fibreglass block overlook a football field more than four metres long. Like a suspended asteroid, it poses a cataclysmic threat. As viewers approach the field, they notice that the opposing teams are made up of figurines of veiled women and American soldiers.

Like many of Huang Yong Ping's works, this striking piece is a complex political and philosophical allegory. A Football Match of June 14th, 2002 is a Dadaist fable and a symbolic construction at the same time. Through the ordinariness of its title, it encourages us to deeply reflect on our perception of time and current events.

A Football Match of June 14th, 2002 by Huang Yong Ping was presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the 2002 show "Mapping the Studio" at the Palazzo Grassi.
