A huge, silver crescent moon with a blistered face and a puffy red nose creates a gloomy impression. His infernal gaze seems lost in dark thoughts.
Mark Handforth creates large-scale sculptures with different aesthetics, from minimalism to Pop Art and salvaged objects. Fascinated by heavenly bodies, the moon is a full-fledged leitmotif in his work. Often, as in this example, it looks straight out of children's stories, whose tone he darkens. The result is a work with a strong visual impact and narrative power.
The Moon was presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the 2009 group show "Mapping the Studio" at the Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana.
