Stud
2008
Diamond aluminium plate
256.5 x 312.4 x 114.3 cm (101 x 123 x 45 in.)
Stud is a huge metal star balancing on the tip of one of its five points, while another truncated point breaks its symmetry and formal harmony.
A cross between sculpture and installation, this aluminium work reflects Mark Handforth's interest in astral motifs, which he always depicts in familiar forms based on popular culture and stereotypes. As Stud shows, he creates large-scale sculptures with different aesthetics, from minimalism to Pop Art and salvaged objects.
The Stud was presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the major collective show "Mapping the Studio" in 2009 at the Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
