Notion of Family series

Made between 2001 and 2014, LaToya Ruby Frazier's ambitious series of photographs The Notion of Family documents the decline of her Pennsylvania hometown, once a capital of steel production, through the experience of three generations of women: her grandmother, her mother and herself.
By combining analog photography and the genre of photojournalism, Frazier brings to light a collective history and universal issues. The series generates deep feelings of empathy through the medium's capacity to connect viewers with the people who are photographed.
The nine photographs by LaToya Ruby Frazier presented in the exhibition Dancing With Myself at the Museum Folkwang in Essen (2016) are part of the series The Notion of Family, which was first presented by the Pinault Collection in the exhibition Dancing With Myself in Venice (2018).
