Untitled (Composition) Painting no. 4

1959

Mixed media on burlap

200 x 150 x 4 cm

Untitled (Composition) Painting No. 4 is almost entirely covered with opaque black paint, although some rare light spots show through. There are gaping holes in the middle, some of which are partly covered with coarse pieces of cloth.

Manolo Millares' expressive, radical works stress the gesture and eschew any theoretical or conceptual dimension. He combines various techniques and materials, starting with torn, knotted or glued burlap, which gives the usually black paintings a physical density. The perforated area appearing like a leitmotiv is a "homunculus", a man in a primitive state, according to the artist's mythology.

Untitled (Composition), Painting No. 4 will be presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the exhibition “Au-delà de la couleur” ("Beyond Colour") at the Couvent des Jacobins in Rennes in June 2021.
