From Surface to Surface – A Tetrahedron
Bronze
150 × 130 × 120 cm
Japanese artist Susumu Koshimizu (b. 1947) created this work as part of a series exploring how a mass retains its identity even when its shape changes. All the tetrahedrons (triangular pyramids) share the same size and weight but take on different appearances. Originally made in cement, he switched to bronze for this version to achieve sharper edges. For Koshimizu, the material qualities of bronze matter more than the specific form he shapes it into. By using a strict geometric shape, the artist reduces any personal touch and lets the material take centre stage, reversing the traditional relationship where form takes precedence over material.
