Paper, stone

78.7 x 94 x 94 cm

A paper cube with an open top reveals a stone in its centre. This comparison between two very different materials plays on a poetic perception of the contrasts, heaviness and chaotic surface of the stone against the lightness and evenness of paper.

The use of Japanese handcrafted paper that characterises the series of works Kami (“Paper”) by Susumu Koshimizu, from which the installation Paper comes, reveals the highly expressive quality of this material, as well as its formal freedom. While the stone integrated in each of these installations highlights the properties of paper, its own materiality also takes a central role in the artist’s future creations that stage the creative act.

A work that marks a major turn in Susumu Koshimizu’s career, Paper belongs to the Pinault Collection. This work was first shown at the 2013 “Prima Materia” (“Raw Material”) exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
