Seated Artist
1971
Polyester resin and fiberglass, polychromed in oil, mixed media, with accessories
129.5 x 86.4 x 99.1 cm (51 x 34 x 39 in.)
Seated Artist clearly states Duane Hanson's intention: showing reality as it is, especially Americans as they are in their everyday lives.
This hyper-realistic sculpture in resin and fibreglass belongs to a very large series of lifecasts that the artist began making in the 1960s, as tremendous social, political and cultural upheavals were rocking the United States. Seated Artist is all the more powerful in that it is a self-portrait of Hanson wondering what to do about the state of the world.
A psychological and sociological portrait that looks as though it is about to speak, Seated Artist was exhibited for the first time during the "Debout !" ("Stand Up!") show in 2018 at the Couvent des Jacobins in Rennes.
