Glazed ceramic

33 × 44,5 × 28,6 cm

At a time marked by major phenomena such as the conquest of space, the evolution of technology and the rise of mass consumption, the Austrian artist Kiki Kogelnik (1935-1997), based in the United States, had no hesitation in drawing on popular cultures and counter-cultures to forge her own aesthetic, questioning the representation of the body.

In 1974, Kiki Kogelnik made her first ceramics at the instigation of her potter friend Renate Fuhry, whom she had met in Vienna and whom she portrays as a futuristic punk biker. This portrait is part of a series of female heads modelled by the artist as robotic avatars, transformed and sometimes joined by non-gendered hybrid creatures. Kiki Kogelnik masters the possibilities of clay, coloured enamels, and varnishes.
