Peinture, 290 x 390 cm, novembre 1996
1996
Acrylic on canvas - tryptich
290 x 390 cm (114 3/16 x 153 9/16 in.)
This imposing triptych by Pierre Soulages, which is in the Pinault Collection, attests to his obsession with black. Entirely covered, the surface of the canvas becomes, through horizontal streaks and contrasts, a real mirror whose reflections conduct light. The materiality of this meditative, profound work is thus close to sculpture. Peinture, 290 x 390 cm, novembre 1996 (Painting, 290 x 390 cm, November 1996) is revealing of the artist's approach: he refuses to allow his work to be lyrical.
Several periods can be discerned in Soulages' career, when he varied colours and shapes. The year 1979 marked a turning point. In the 1980s and 1990s, this contemporary of Rothko and Hartung developed his outrenoir idea in large-scale polyptychs. He works with black paint but light is what he seeks.
Peinture, 290 x 390 cm, novembre 1996 was first presented by the Pinault Collection at the "Qui a peur des artistes ?" (“Who’s Afraid of Artists?”) show at the Palais des Arts in Dinard in 2009.
