Dross
2004
Photo piece, 20 panels
282 x 420 cm (111 x 165 3/8 in.)
In the photomontage Dross, Gilbert&George, dressed in pastel-colored dandy suits, are seen from behind. In this symmetrical composition, their face is represented in a double profile, looking both to the right and the left. The two artists are standing in front of a thick wall lined with cardboard boxes and garbage bags. Letters at the bottom of the image correspond to solar disks at the top and spell out the word Dross.
This artwork by the iconic duo is emblematic of their work since the 1980s. Their practice of photomontage is inspired by the art of stained glass, as shown by the thick black lines that cut through the image and the use of bright, simply shaded colors.
This artwork Dross was first shown by the Pinault Collection in the exhibition The Passage of Time at the Tri Postal in Lille, in 2007-2008.
