Chimera

2013

Ink and acrylic on canvas

244 x 366.5 cm (96 1/16 x 144 5/16 in.)

Stains, overflows and signs blend on the surface of this immense canvas, and acrylic and ink projections alternate with frenetic drawings. As shown in this work, plastic artist of Ethiopian origin Julie Mehretu is developing a complex technique, both pictorial and graphic, in search of visual saturation as a metaphor of the extreme urban density in which our societies are rooted.

Chimeras, as suggested by the title, or utopias, Julie Mehretu's works are hallucinatory topographical visions lost in a thick, gray and black pictorial mass. She says they are “story maps of no location.”

Held in the Pinault Collection, Chimera was presented in the group show À Triple tour. Collection Pinault (“triple locked”) at the Paris Conciergerie, in 2013.
