Composed in the manner of the paintings of old masters, Annie Leibovitz's celebrity portraits are the fruit of painstaking preparation and orchestration. The photographer curates the atmosphere of each photo after engaging in lengthy conversation with her subjects in an attempt to "connect with their world". She had Brad Pitt a pose as a modern version of Manet's Olympia (1863), playing mischievously with the status of the image, the notion of stardom, and the history of art. Meryl Streep pulled and stretched her face to embody other personae, while Jodie Foster was transformed into a ghostly projection. Michael Jordan displays his profile with pride, the number he wore as a player — 23 — in his ear. Last but not least, in Leibovitz's image of Andy Warhol photographing us, he turns each of us into a reflection of a false self-portrait.
