Untitled (Sea Monster)
Glazed ceramic
48 × 32 × 22 cm
Kiki Kogelnik's ceramic heads appear to be a form of joyous pop celebration, but they can also take on a darker character. They echo her exploration of the representation of the body, as with the "Sleepy Head" depicting a doll-robot or woman-object, somewhere between tears and screams. Throughout her life, the Austrian artist who emigrated to the United States remained committed to emancipation, encouraging the women of her generation to become, in the words of the writer and feminist philosopher Donna Haraway, "cyborgs rather than goddesses".
