German artist Martin Kippenberger's impertinence, in both his attitude and his art, meant that right from the word go he attracted attacks from critics, who found some of his jokes to be of bad taste, misogynistic, or racist, and who focused on his alcoolism. In 1989, he made his definitive reply by producing a wood sculpture, in his own image, as a naughty boy who had been punished and put in a corner, which he titled Martin, ab in die Ecke und schäm dich (Martin, into the Corner, You Should Be Ashamed of Yourself).
