variable, site-specific dimensions

Ttéia 1, C is a work by Brazilian artist Lygia Pape in the tradition of spatialism, an artistic movement that emerged in the mid-20th century and developed between Brazil and Italy. Lygia Pape's work, made up of gold wires stretched in space, evokes a “magnetic space” where rays of light penetrate the darkness and attach themselves to the structure's thin supports to create a unique sensory experience.
Pape's “Ttéias”, whose name is a contraction of the Portuguese word for ‘canvas’ and “teteia”, denoting something graceful and delicate, encapsulate his artistic process. They take the form of geometric installations of silver or gold threads, stretching from floor to ceiling or wall to wall. These lines invent a space “where there is no longer any distinction between inside and outside, but a continuous plane”, evoking cosmic constellations or architectural spider webs. These installations delineate volumes with a powerful visual effect, charging the space with a sensation of indefinability, of immateriality.

This work was presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection on the occasion of the “Icons” exhibition at the Punta della Dogana in Venice, 2023.
