Sigmar Polke painted Sans Titre (Untitled) in the 1970s, at the time of the expansion of the New Age movement, closely associated with hippies and with a vocation to transform individuals through spiritual awakening. A modern alchemist, this German artist blends colours, forms and materials. Acrylics, gouache, ink, and metallic paint blend together on the canvas, creating surprising combinations of materials. This experimental approach seeks to restore the seductive power of the image, whose rendering is deeply organic.
The painting was first shown by the Pinault Collection in 2011 at the "Le Monde vous appartient" (“The World Belongs to You”) exhibition at the Palazzo Grassi.
