Ohne Titel (Untitled)
1990
Acrylic, ink on paper
242.6 x 254.6 cm (95 1/2 x 100 1/4 in.)
On a white background, an abstract mixture of smudges and coloured lines stand alongside motifs in ink, sometimes schematic, sometimes organic.
Sigmar Polke opted for a fundamentally “multi-directional” approach drawing on all genres and all techniques to create this painting in the 1990s, with the aim of restoring the seductive power of the image. The German artist’s works go beyond any hierarchy of genre, source of inspiration or motif. Working on the level of format as well as materials and colours, the composition Untitled can be read on many levels and stirs a wide range of emotions.
This work was first shown by the Pinault Collection in 2011 at the "Le Monde vous appartient" (“The World Belongs to You”) exhibition at the Palazzo Grassi.
