Sod and Sodie Sock Comp O.S.O.
1998
Performance/video tape/installation Wood, military tents, oatmeal, butter, cooking utensils, military clothing, refrigerator, plumbing, sonotubes, wigs, furniture
Variable dimensions
Resulting from a collaboration between American artists Mike Kelley and Paul McCarthy, the installation Sod and Sodie Sock Comp O.S.O immerses us into the world of an American military camp. The tents are mixed with a series of objects and videos that tell us about daily life in an American military camp.
This ambiguous work does not seem to express a clear political message but rather a cultural reflection and a willingness to invest in America’s historical memory. The artists' performances and the presence of unexpected objects, including writings by Clement Greenberg, Georges Bataille and Wilhelm Reich, opens up a gap that allows us to view the camp as performance.
The installation Sod and Sodie Sock Comp O.S.O by Mike Kelley and Paul McCarthy, curated by the Pinault Collection, was presented in 2009 as part of the exhibition "Un certain état du monde ?" (“A Certain State of the World?”) at the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow.
