Concrete and ambulatory equipment

210.8 x 76.2 x 99.1 cm (83 x 30 x 39 in.)

Untitled 2011 is a large-scale sculpture in poured concrete that stands on a base made of Zimmer frames. As a colossus with feet of clay, this massive piece is imbued with frailty.

Justin Matherly conceives his sculptures from his notes on his philosophical or theoretical readings. He makes a foam model that will be the basis of a deliberately rough mold. This way, when the concrete is poured, imperfections appear, which evoke the traces and scars of time. Through this process, the artist reinterprets and subverts with humor and irony ancient statuary, a recurring reference in his sculptural work.

The Pinault Collection presented for the first time this work by Justin Matherly at the exhibition À Triple tour (“triple locked”) at the Paris Conciergerie, in 2013.
