Felix Gonzalez Torres AMERICA AMERICA

In 2004, Sturtevant reproduced Untitled (America), an emblematic work by Felix Gonzalez-Torres (victim of AIDS in 1996), composed of a garland of light bulbs hanging from the ceiling. A close reader of the codes of pop art, minimalism and conceptualism, the American artist used her work to attack cultural authority, uniqueness, and authenticity.

This critical dimension of the effect of an artwork’s technical replicability on its value was at the heart of Sturtevant’s practice from the 1960s. The artist makes detailed reproductions of canonical works by her contemporaries, creators who defined the 20th century. Homage or misappropriation? By questioning the concept of copyright, Sturtevant revolutionised the question of originality and signature.
