Skull Spectrum
2009
Stainless steel, plastic
304.8 x 91.4 x 40.6 cm (120 x 36 x 16 in.)
The 21 rainbow-coloured stepped skulls in Skull Spectrum display a formal shift from a realistic sculpture of a motif to a basic, almost abstract polygonal shape. Made of brightly coloured steel and plastic, they look as though they are carved in wax, forming a vast memento mori in the age of technical reproducibility.
The skull is more than a leitmotif in American visual artist Matthew Day-Jackson’s work. It is a veritable fetish. His visually powerful installations, including Skull Spectrum, offer an ontological reflection on the past, present and future of human life.
This work was shown for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the exhibition "Mapping the Studio" (2009-2011) at the Punta della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
