Standing tall, the life-size figure in My Lonesome Cowboy has the features of a teenager from the world of mangas, including excessive hair and a childlike face. Completely naked, he proudly brandishes a burst of semen spurting out of his penis and into the air like a lasso.
Referring to an Andy Warhol film, and through him to American Pop Art, and to Japanese otaku subculture, Murakami plays with popular motifs, putting them in an unexpected, hyper-sexualised context. The provocative work is a sharp critique of a society driven by virtual fantasies.
Like its female counterpart Hiropon, My Lonesone Cowboy is in the Pinault Collection. They were seen together at the 2009 major group show "Mapping the studio" at the Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana in Venice.
