A hundred translucent cubes are lined up in ten parallel rows. Viewers strolling through these strange alleys realise they are actually coloured resin mouldings of the empty space of 100 different chairs. In this monumental, surprising work, Rachel Whiteread achieves the feat of giving substance to absence.
Untitled (One Hundred Spaces) belongs to the series of "negative" casts that the British artist has been making since the late 1980s. She has also moulded bathtubs, staircases and houses. Referring in particular to Bruce Nauman's A Cast of the Space under my Chair (1965), this treatment of objects is a poetic archaeology of everyday life.
A striking example of Whiteread's art, Untitled (One Hundred Spaces) was shown for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the 2009 "Mapping the Studio" exhibition at the Palazzo Grassi.
