Lying on a bed, two bodies - waxworks in the image of Maurizio Cattelan - create a faithful reconstruction of the photograph by Gilbert & George, “In Bed with Lorca”, showing the two artists sleeping in the poet’s bed. The realism and facial expression of the statues flit between humour and malaise.
Maurizio Cattelan often ironically borrows an image or work by other artists, playing with the notions of paternity and originality, to challenge contemporary thought and artistic theory. However, the work We can also be considered a meditation on death, since the two characters are positioned like corpses in a coffin. The theme of dual personalities also recurs throughout the work of this Italian artist.
The artist’s work in the Pinault Collection was presented at the Palazzo Grassi at the "Le Monde vous appartient" (“The World Belongs to You”) exhibition (2011-2012).
