Untitled series-1
2010
Copper wire embedded in gesso panel
45.8 x 45.8 x 3.5 cm (each)
White squares hardly distinguishable from the wall when observed from afar, these nine wood and plaster panels must be perceived in their individuality: to observe them one at a time is to understand the internal scale of each one and the palpable physicality of Prabhavathi Meppayil’s work. The gaze lingers on the threads of oxidised copper that are part of each panel, expression of the temporality of the artist’s process and vibrant assets of this work with multiple optical effects.
Mastering the techniques of Indian goldsmithing, Meppayil fuses a highly personal contemporary visual style. The tangible traces of presence that appear in Untitled series - 1 testify to the manner in which traditional practices, in the hands of an artist fully conscious of the historical quality of shape, can enrich the exploration of a medium.
The panels Untitled Series - 1 by Prabhavathi Meppayil are part of the Pinault Collection. They were first shown at the 2016 “Accrochage” ("Hanging") exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
