Scruff of the Neck (Stopgap)
Cast aluminium and polished aluminium, shafts and pieces of polished aluminium
Variable dimensions
Hybrid biomorphic, mechanical creatures are endowed with human features. They are actually sculptures depicting outsize braces. The change of scale heightens their weirdness and brings about a sense of anxiety.
Scruff of the Neck are two aluminium sculptures in a series presented at an organic exhibition at Marian Goodman New York in 2016. They suggest that the gallery is a human body transposed to the scale of architecture. Nairy Baghramian has fun with the link between architecture and dentistry, exhibiting sculptures that seem to be under orthodontic strain.
The sculptures in Nairy Baghramian's Scruff of the Neck (Stopgap) series are being presented for the first time by the Pinault Collection during the “Untitled, 2020” exhibition at the Punta della Dogana, Venice (2020).
