Midnight Crossing
1997
Video installation
24min.
Visitors wander through a dark, maze-like room with flashing lights. Meanwhile, a text is read by the artist, whose voice is electronically modified. A veritable microcosm of consciousness and its wanderings, the installation Midnight Crossing probes the limits of rationality and perception.
Since the 1970s, Gary Hill has combined language with video to interact with the viewer's mind and feelings. He explores complex networks of words and images to show how the brain weaves links between physical and mental objects.
Midnight Crossing by Gary Hill was first presented by the Pinault Collection during the 2008 exhibition “Passage du Temps” (“Passage of Time”) at the Tri Postal in Lille.
