Live Through That ?! (Atelier Brancusi)

2014

Black and white video (silent)

7min. 35sec.

Black paint covers Lili Reynaud-Dewar’s entirely nude body. She moves alone through the Atelier Brancusi in Paris without interacting with the sculptor's works. The choreographic sequences, directly based on Josephine Baker's dances, are interspersed with "breaks" made up of repetitive, daily, even transgressive actions: walking, reading the newspaper, smoking.

In 2011 Reynaud-Dewar began a series of filmed performances, including the video Live Through That?! (Atelier Brancusi). They question the neutrality of the institutional framework in which she performs a silent, humour-tinged critique. Her dark, dynamic body is literally laid bare. The jarring contrast breaks with the frozen, immaculate character of the museum space.

Live Through That?! (Atelier Brancusi) was presented by the Pinault Collection at the 2018 show "Dancing with Myself" at the Punta della Dogana in Venice.
