L’Homme aux larmes

The flat and polished eyes of this sculpture, named “L'Homme aux larmes”, evoke the ancient tradition of placing a coin on the eyes of the dead. An old Christian superstition says that without this, the deceased could be blinded by the “Divine Light” upon entering Heaven. However, this custom predates Christianity and could also be linked to the idea of not looking a dead person in the eye to avoid the curse of the evil eye.
