Ingubo Yesizwe is a giant hybrid creature sewn from pieces of leather, rubber, gauze, ribbon, steel, and other salvaged materials.
Ingubo Yesizwe implies protection, integration, and the potential for transformation, both of the materials Hlobo uses and the country he lives in”, explains Kerryn Greenberg, curator of the Tate Modern exhibition for which the work was commissioned in 2008. The South African artist mixes different materials, to explore his own identity, origins, ethnicity and colonial heritage.
The work Ingubo Yesizwe, part of the Pinault Collection, was presented at the Palazzo Grassi at the "Le Monde vous appartient" (“The World Belongs to You”) exhibition (2011-2012).
