Crystal Landscape of Inner Body

2000

Crystal, metal, glass

95 x 70 x 190 cm (37 3/8 x 27 9/16 x 74 13/16 in.)

The work Crystal Landscape of Inner Body, produced by Zhen Chen shortly before his death from leukaemia, evokes the fragile and ephemeral nature of life. Composed of eleven pieces of blown glass taking the form of human internal organs arranged on a medical bed, this glass sculpture plays with reflections to propose a meditation on the relationship between internal and external, individual and society, material and spiritual.

The work of Zhen Chen (1955-2000) often consists of creating harmony through difference, using the human body, illness and medicine as metaphors. With a passion for traditional Chinese medicine and philosophy, the artist draws on many cultural influences to embody ancient forms of understanding connected to nature and the elements.

Crystal Landscape of Inner Body by Zhen Chen, part of the Pinault Collection, was shown at the collective exhibition "Eloge du Doute" (“In Praise of Doubt”) at the Punta della Dogana in Venice (2011-2013).
