Assèchement des zones humides

2008

Oil and antiseptics on canvas

65.3 x 81 x 2.1 cm

Against a marine background, a naked woman’s body is wounded by dozens of nails pervading the canvas. A man with his face deformed by cuts, holds an enormous thorny rose. Other incongruous elements, such as an umbrella, reinforce the painful and enigmatic nature of this painting by Philippe Perrot.

The artist explains that “this bloody side, these cuts, this flesh that often spills over, liquifies and invades the painting is an aspect that really corresponds to what [it] undertakes to do with regard to taboos: opening the wound, happily butchering the unspoken family history.” Giving no precise explanation, Perrot leaves the viewer to face this violent imagery alone with their imagination, with one possible avenue: the antiseptics that serves as the base for the background of his work.

The work Assèchement des zones humides (Drying of Wetlands) was first presented by the Pinault Collection at the "Le Monde vous appartient" (“The World Belongs to You”) exhibition (2011) at the Palazzo Grassi.
