Six trames de grillage

1973

Metal and acrylic wires on wood and aluminium

100 × 100 × 7 cm

François Morellet (1926–2016) made this piece continuing his exploration of grids and geometric patterns. Unlike his earlier painted grids, this work uses six overlapping layers of wire mesh, forming a three-dimensional netted structure. The superimposed meshes create intricate patterns of lines and shapes that shift with the viewer’s perspective, emphasizing the work’s physical presence as an object. By replacing painted grids with metal, Morellet highlights the artwork’s materiality and challenges traditional flatness in painting. This method reflects his interest in combining chance and order, allowing light, shadow, and spatial relationships to play an active role.
