John Baldessari’s work transcends all artistic categories in its melding of pop, appropriationism, and conceptual art.
Close to the “Picture Generation”, he explored the stereotypes of popular imagery and mechanical reproduction, creating new configurations of meanings by using images as ready-mades. His series Arms & Legs (Specif. Elbows & Knees), Etc. consists of photographic prints that he cut up, painted, and mounted on cardboard. In (Part One): Three Elbows (One Blue), he used fragmentation and repetition to turn the work into a kind of musical score, in which anatomical parts become incomplete melodies awaiting their recomposition.
The Pinault Collection first showed this work in 2023 at the Couvent des Jacobins in Rennes, as part of the exhibition Forever Sixties
