These eight, extremely sensory paintings show as many brushed white paint treatments, at times swirling, at times harshly scraped. These expressive pictorial experiments are the result of actions during which the hands, feet and entire body of the artist replace paintbrushes.
Created between 1989 and 1992, the eight Weiße Bilders (White Paintings) propose, notably with the insertion of nails and use of the artist’s own body, a concentration of Günther Uecker’s pictorial practice. White, like nails, is omnipresent in his work and culminates in a performance staged by the artist at the 1970 Venice Biennale, during which he painted white the black room in which he was, including himself.
The paintings Weiße Bilders by Günther Uecker belong to the Pinault Collection. They were first shown at the 2016 “Accrochage” (“Hanging”) exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
