Untitled
1964-1965
Acrylic, pencil and arrow wire on canvas
184 x 123 cm (72 7/16 x 48 7/16 in.)
Untitled appears like a page of a notebook, free from any notes and partially erased. Hence, it is useless to look for silent meaning, that should be found in the classic eloquence of a sequence of words: the work is captured as a whole, inviting the observer to read both between the lines and the lines themselves. The narrative dictated by Shûsaku Arakawa then takes shape in the flow and ebb of the pigment, which subtly degrades the straight lines.
This minimalist work in acrylic, pencil and fishing line collage on canvas was created by Arakawa in the 1960s: the artist then used pencil and ink to combine words, scientific diagrams and realistic drawings of found objects. Untitled is part of this conceptual theme, though it stands out for its extreme bareness.
Shûsaku Arakawa’s painting Untitled belongs to the Pinault Collection. The work was first shown at the “Prima Materia” (“Raw Material”) exhibition at the Punta della Dogana.
